All .EXE files open windows media center – windows7 virus

Two days ago, one of my friends called me for help in windows 7 problem .. when ever he opens a “.EXE” executable file he got ‘windows media center’ opened !

When i started to tell him what to do, I realized that its not possible to open rstrui or msconfig or even the task manager cuz all are executable LOL ..

I thought it could be a registry problem, and guess what regedit is also an executable file =D .. so I opened my registryEditor and started digging … and here is what i found :

the .exe file Extension in locates in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\

but we still can’t change anything in his computer because we can’t run the registry editor =D .. so I created this .reg file that hopefully saved him .. http://www.4shared.com/file/0LaqiLZj/exeFix.html
 
Hope this helps if anyone else have the same problem 🙂

    i managed to get into registry with some live boot tools i have but could only think of this to be the issue
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
    Default being “%1” %*

    Guys just Restart Your Computer In “SAFE MODE” by pressing F8 when it is starting/ Restarting….
    Now after its ON.., Go to control Panel—> Programs –> Turn Windows Features ON or OFF –> Go to Media Features, Expand it and UN-CHECK / DE-SELECT The WindowsMediaCenter..
    Its Over Guys Finished….

    ” NOTE: Plez dont Enable WindowsMediaCenter ”

    Its so simple, I Found it out After trying all ******** found through Internet…
    Works with everyone… Happies….

        Pls what am i doing wrong? Aftet going to ‘Turn windows features on or off’, it opens in windows media centre again.
        please help.

    alaasdk Buddy you are awesome!!…loads of thanks.. your link fixed my problem..just downloaded it and then restarted my computer…everything is ok. The other solution..going in safemode and disabling windows media centre didn’t work for me but your registry link did..once again loads of thanks 🙂 🙂

    Hi,

    Does not help to me. can not open ‘turn windows features on or of’ because it tries to open with internet explorer.
    any other ideas? please help, it ir really annoying . :/
